SMART METER REPORTING
You may be wondering what all the fuss is about with Smart Meters and want to know what it is they can really do.
Why are Smart Meters (Advance Meters – AMR) a good idea?
Well, in these days of spiralling energy costs they provide the tools to help manage and reduce energy consumption
How do they do that?
Businesses use energy (and water) in different ways, for different purposes and at different times. Advanced meters will capture your energy consumption 24/7 and record it in half-hourly intervals. This provides a treasure trove of data that holds the key to understanding and reducing your energy usage. The main trick is how you view it. You need simple, easy to understand reports that allow you to focus on the key elements. This means having the right platform.
Can they save money?
You bet! A good platform provides a select range of reports focussed on your specific circumstances, and that can highlight areas and patterns of wastage. Form this, you, like many others, can save thousands of £ Pounds a year through relatively simple changes.
Whether it’s gas, water or electricity we will tailor reports to your specific business and have them delivered directly to your inbox, or if you like, your own username and log-in.
Some actual examples:
£11,000 of savings pa
A well-known museum had a high level of site capacity assigned to its main site. Each kVa was costing £1.23 per month. It was paying for approximately 800 kVa per month that it didn’t need. By running a capacity check we were able to identify this issue and work with the DNO to get it reduced. This resulted in more than £11,000 of savings per annum.
Identify the problem
An insurance company’s building is vacant over the weekend. However, we found a significant amount of electricity was being used at this time. Detailed checks found air-conditioning controls, in a floor previously occupied by a tenant, were still in use. The controls were located above a false ceiling. Once identified, the site manager achieved a 7% savings by addressing the problem, which had been running for over 1 year.
A large comprehensive school was using a very large amount of gas between 1am and 6am without knowing it. Simple adjustments to thermostats and time clocks, as well as human behaviour resulted in an 18% saving
Energy efficiency validation
Smart meters can also be used to validate the effects of energy efficiency measures. A large hotel with swimming pool and leisure centre upgraded to high efficiency boilers. They were able to track and confirm the 20% increase in efficiency promised by the suppliers.
Be warned of equipment failures
Alarms: What would happen in food businesses if freezers or refrigerators failed on a weekend? Advanced meters would send an alarm to alert the staff.
Water leaks cost money
There are numerous cases of premises with water leaks being identified, some of these leaks had occurred over extended periods.
Did you know?
Today, approximately 62% of electricity bills are made up of non-electricity costs. These included a raft of environmental taxes and charges, transmission and other market costs. These charges are levied on consumption. Every time you reduce your consumption you reduce many associated costs as well. Not forgetting the decrease in your carbon footprint!
